Lucky Magazine 4th Challenge!
Fun Jeans...
We wore out our Bongo jeans, flared our college jeans, and embraced our maternity jeans. My Beachy hair to Desiree’s pixie cuts – we have seen it all. I love our long-time, quirky relationship that truly means the world to me. We are so different but think so much alike including our personal style. We both love basics and prefer comfort over anything else. She usually leans conservative and always fashionable and I do more mixing of classics and trends. I gravitate towards accessories – often needing to be saved from a black hole of vintage accessory bargains and she is straight up pearls. Shopping is more about time together so sometimes just playing pretend in the shoes section is all we need. We have lived together, studied together, traveled, planned weddings, raced, and watched our lives change with husbands and babies.
Meet Desiree. She is a NICU nurse, so scrubs are a way of life, but she is always adorable and it looks effortless. Her clothing style is tailored, preppy, and fun. Think: boating, game day, mom of two boys - yet still girly. She stresses about not having anything to wear but always pulls it off perfectly. She whips out a classic dress she’s had for 5 years and it looks perfect with her latest short hair trend. You can’t help but want her hair, or really just stare at it with envy just imagining yourself whacking all your hair off to look that cute. Yes, she gets compliments on it every time I am with her. It always changes, and that is what I love most about her style. If only I could rock 10 different hairstyles in a year!
My clothing style is classic shapes with a twist. I like bold and funky accessories and I love to play with the trend in small doses. It has taken me a while and, a few phases, but I love clothes, and always have. Grunge was not my best look…or midriffs if we must go there. I still cringe at some of those pictures and really hope they have disappeared somehow like the memory of my 17 year old belly button catching air - just hanging out there over my way-too-high rise, bad fitting jeans. I love making and wearing new clothes or styles, and shopping (or junking) in artsy stores fully inspires me. My hair has been the same for as long as I can remember. I have gone in and out of bangs and layers (I know…I live on the edge) and still refuse to fuss about my hair.
When it comes to beauty, Desiree and I share stories, brands, and likes, just like any other good friends do. She brought me to the Lancome makeup counter several years ago and introduced me to this stunning sales woman she had met. By the end of our conversation, I was sold on anything Lancome and needed someone to talk me out of spending my next paycheck to look like this girl. She was a rocker with buzzed, spiked hair - dyed white, and the most beautiful round face painted perfectly in the of-the-moment palette. I was giddy with my new outlook on makeup…and conveniently decided against the spiked hair. Desiree and I were convinced that we were dripping in cool after we padded this woman’s makeup commission for that week. She helped us realize we could step out a little and find the confidence to change-up our makeup, and for me…highlight instead of hide behind my skin. To this day we have our Lancome favorites, all because of our ultra-sophisticated rocker “friend” (who by the way, pulled off laced up Dr. Martens behind a Lancome counter with no question).
Some of our favorites:
Desiree: DHC deep cleansing oil, Lancome Hypnose Mascara, Bare Essentials makeup, GAP, JCrew, any bargain, big hair (inspired by the original Hairspray), Burts Bees Lotion, minimal perfume, oreos, and mint sweet tea. Never leave home without: bobby pin, water (excessive amounts)
Lisa: Aveda cleanser, Dermalogica Tinted Moisturizer, Tarte Matte blush, Lancome Definicils Mascara, Anthropologie, Etsy, Local Savannah Boutiques, any bargain, hair in a bun, coconut oil, lavendar or gardenia scent, Pinot Noir. Never leave home without: coffee or water, chapstick, almonds
Living in different cities, our phones and computers keep us close. We even shop together thanks to “text support". We send each other pictures with the subject lines, "What do you think?" or "Am I crazy?" Since we have grown up and into our families, shopping has taken on a new meaning for both of us. We have learned to contemplate instead of impulse, we budget then buy, and we talk each other off the ledge of spending too much in rational therapy-like moments. We are always just a phone call away.Come shopping with us!
